Mexico
After a long hot summer of fixing this and that, we were exited of our first trip on the then apache 11,
we departed Mazatlan on November 24 2005,heading to la paz in Baha california, calm seas and
thick fog was there to greet us and had fun and trying to dodge the baha cruising boat fleet, So we set
a course 15 miles to the north of the rumline thinking that the other boats are all sailing with new
electronics and will be maybe 300 feet off course that should be a better distance from them and the
la paz - mazatlan, ferry as couldn't see more than the length of the boat distance ahead. It stayed like
that all day despite the Mexican sun trying its best to burn it away. Eventually it cleared at about 1am
when we saw the navigation lights of another sailboat heading on a recripical course and they said
over the vhf that they had 2 close calls with shipping so jumped also the 15 miles north yeehaa. Finally
arriving safe in Balandra Bay a very beautiful anchorage, We saw the World famous in this part of
the world mushroom head rock and dropped the hook in about 15 ft of crystal clear sea. After a nice
walk over the headland and stroll along the white sand we headed back to the boat were ready to
have a nice sierra fish that we hooked on the way over when a very strong south wind came up and as
murphy would have it we were in a crap place to anchor, normally during these months its only
norther winds that hit here, we quickly pulled the dinghy out of the water as the sea picked up
quicker than viagra. The grill fell over and that was the end of sid the sierra .It turned out to be very
uncomfortable to sleep checking the deep sounder all night and checking not to introduce apache to
that bleedin famous mushroom head bleeding rock. , So the baja side gave us his best to welcome
us.Next morning we raised the anchor and headed to La Paz and Marina Palmira , This was a really
nice marina and got us thinking why we stayed in mazatlan so long.la paz turned out also to be a great
place to get boat parts etc at usa price's. We were only going to stay a couple of days but heard a pan
pan on the vhf from a yacht in trouble on the bar, answering the vhf lead to a long and enjoyable
week of helping the crew of the vessel CYA for more on this story clickthankfully the skipper axel
and tommy are fine now and We wish Axel best wishes for his adventures on his new vessel .
Sea of cortez and la paz
We then had to wait a few days for a weather window that would let us leave to explore the sea of
cortez and its islands, we wanted to go as far as Santa Rosalia, visiting a friend that was there, well... we
never thought about what northerlies can do to stop your plans, and when we departure to explore the
Island of espiritu santo. We got to see how the northerly wind affects the sea around here in short crap.
At least in Ireland we get lots of wind but the waves are further apart even if 20 ft. We sometimes
were doing 2.5 kn and thats with the engine. We stopped at isla partida and threw our new to us
dingy in the tourquise blue water to check out the island. Next day we headed north and caught a big
Sierra and after pulling him in I threw the lure back in the water to wash the blood off and yeehaa we
hooked an other one. We checked out all the anchorages on the island's and they were pretty cool.
Derek had a shower at candelero and was clean for a change. We were sorry we didnt get to expolor
the underwater world as I had a bad ear infection from a 5* hotel pool and anyway the water was
bleeding freezing. Heading north the weather was crap and we got as far as san evaristo so sorry
richard in Santa Rosalia we headed back slowly to La Paz where we contacted him and he came down
on the faster option bus and then sailed over to Mazatlan to have Christmas with our riffraff buddies
there yeehaa.
After a month of partying with our good friends in Mazatlan we decided it was time to say a sad
goodbye to friends for the last 5 years.Seven other boats left the same day they were leaving at 11 am
so I made sure that my boat and dock were a total mess so they might get ahead. So After they left we
started to clean up and get ship shape for our trip south. It was a sad farwell at the dock with Tommy
and shannon (Toroa) Bob and maralyn (griffin) Dana from Havana, Lena from TG Wazzo Willem and
tequila from Shafina, Mizusu from Tortue and Genie from Margaritaville. Big Don from Shayak and
abuelo Don from Force Nothing. Then the Vhf started and the good byes and good luck was on the
radio for the next ten minute's, So it was goodbye mazatlan Hello World
